A large crowd of job seekers turned out to the Ferguson 1000 Hiring Event on Saturday.
Recruiters from companies, nonprofits and universities staffed tables in the JC Penney Convention Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where attendees were able to ask questions face to face, as opposed to scouring the internet for job resources.
The April 15 event was a success and we thank all of our partners for their support and getting people hired at our April 16 Hiring Event.
We had over 70 companies at our event. Many companies HIRED on the SPOT due to immediate needs and our pre-registration model. Click here to read more about it.
Ferguson 1000 thanks the 700 plus applicants and the 40 plus corporations who made our "Hiring Event" successful. Stay tuned for future events to help Ferguson and our entire St. Louis community through job creation.
FERGUSON, Mo. (KMOX) – Organizers say Saturday’s Ferguson 1000 hiring event at the Ferguson Community Center was a big success.
They had more than 40 companies and 700 job seekers attend. Businessman and former Missouri gubernatorial candidate Dave Spence founded Ferguson 1000 in hopes of bringing employers and residents closer together, “I think the days of just knocking on doors and asking for job applications are over. It’s gotten more technical and more complicated. Job fairs like this require a little homework beforehand and pre-registering. We had 550 people pre-register for this one, plus dozens of walk-ins.
One of those recruiting at the job fair was Jason Wells of Hollywood Casino, “We’re looking for folks with a lot of energy. They are upbeat, positive, exciting, and great with customer service.
Wells said he set up 26 interviews for next week and could have some new hires ready to work in about two weeks. Diana Smith of St. Louis considers herself one of the region’s underemployed, seeking to move up to a better-paying job, “I have some leads. I’d say more than four, so that’s pretty good. I hope I have some surprise leads, as well.

We wanted to expand our company so that we can grow jobs. By being a part of the Ferguson 1000 Minority Business Mentor Program, we were able to get a contract. More contracts like this will help us create jobs. Thank You Ferguson 1000!
I had some challenges in my past and because of my motivation and assistance from those that cared, I enrolled in the Urban League’s “Save our Sons” program. After weeks of job readiness training, dress for success, interviewing skills and job sustainability I felt I was ready. I was fortunate to go on a “Job Field Trip” to Legacy Pharmaceutical Packaging. After the field trip, I was instructed how to apply for a job. A week later I was hired and the fact that I was an ex-felon, didn’t stop me from being hired.

I had been searching for a job for 18 months and was thinking there was no hope. I went to the Ferguson 1000 Hiring Event and had an interview set up within 48 hours. After the interview, I was hired.
I have over 35 jobs that I brought to the Ferguson 1000 Hiring Event. Not only did I get great resumes and candidates, but I have over 15 interviews this week as a result of the Ferguson 1000 Hiring Event.
Keep up to date on what's happening in the Ferguson community.
A few months ago, I had the pleasure of sharing my economic development research in a TED TALK. The topic was “African Americans and Technology – Empowerment or Exclusion”, and I spoke about how to make diversity a priority as St. Louis becomes a tech hub.
